Hydropower or water power is the power derived from the force of moving water. Hydropower is useful purposes by mankind for centuries like grinding grains, transportation and others. In Nepal, Pani Ghatta or water mills have been in use for centuries. A Ghatta is a traditional turbine with a series of timber plates. The energy of water falling from a higher elevation forces the shaft to rotate. Pani Ghattas , many modifications are made by making the system more simpler and more efficient. It is estimated that there are over 20000 Ghattas in Nepal re still in use. After the invention of the hydro turbine in the early 19th century, hydropower use was revolutionized.
